Poker is a game in which players try to create the best hand of cards they can, while betting against other players to try and win a pot of money. Poker has been played since at least the 17th century, and may have originated in Persia or Europe. Although poker has gained recognition as a sports event and has been featured on ESPN and other television networks, it is not yet recognized at the Olympic Games. However, the International Mind Sports Association has recognized it as a mind sport in 2010.<\/p>\n
The game is played by a dealer, who shuffles a deck of cards and deals them face up to each player. Cards are dealt in a series of rounds, each round ending with a betting phase.<\/p>\n
In the first round, a player must make a mandatory bet known as an ante. This is usually a small amount. If the ante is not made, the player may either fold or raise.<\/p>\n
Once the ante has been placed, the next player must bet. This bet is called the player’s “chips.” When the player is finished betting, he can reveal his cards.<\/p>\n
After the cards have been revealed, the player can choose to check, which means that he will not bet. If he checks, another player can raise the bet he has already made.<\/p>\n
There are many variations of the game. Generally, the rules for a game will be based on the type of cards that are used. A common form of the game is Texas Hold’Em.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
