The game of Poker is a card game played between two or more players and for chips (representing money). The object of the game is to win the pot, which is the sum total of all bets made during one deal. A player may win the pot by having a high-ranking poker hand, or by betting so aggressively that other players fold and leave him alone with his winnings. The game can be played with any number of players, but the ideal number is six to eight.<\/p>\n
There are many different variants of the game, but the basic rules remain the same in all of them. Each player is dealt 2 cards, and a round of betting begins after the player to his immediate left places mandatory bets (called blinds) in the pot.<\/p>\n
After the betting phase, each player must decide whether to raise his bet or fold his cards. If he raises his bet, he must then place in the pot the amount of chips (representing money) required by the rules of the variant being played.<\/p>\n
As with all card games, a good poker player will develop his own strategy over time. He will study his results and may also discuss his play with other players for an objective look at his style. He will continually tweak his approach to improve his performance, and he will never stop learning.
