Poker is a card game for two to six players, played with chips that represent money. There are many variants of the game, but they all share certain fundamental features. A poker hand consists of five cards, and the value of each card is in inverse proportion to its mathematical frequency; the more rare the combination of cards, the higher the hand rank. Players may bet that they have the best hand, and other players must either call the bet or concede. Poker is a game of chance, but it also involves considerable skill and psychology.
A hand of poker starts with one or more forced bets, called blind bets, made by the players to the left of the dealer. The dealer then shuffles the cards and deals them to the players, one at a time, starting with the player to his or her left. After each deal, a betting interval begins, and players place their bets into the pot (a container for the bets) according to the rules of the game being played.
Then the next betting round starts. Alex has a pair of kings off the deal, which isn’t too bad, but not good either. Dennis raised earlier, but he only got two cards; perhaps he was trying for three of a kind or a flush. The second betting round ends, and no one raises again, so Dennis wins the pot (and the ante and blind bets). But he doesn’t win all of the money that was put into the pot by the other players, as there may have been some players with better hands than his.
