What is a Casino?

Casino (pronounced: ksino) is any place where people can play games of chance or skill for money. Casinos are most commonly associated with gambling and gaming but they also often feature restaurants, luxury hotels and other forms of entertainment. In the United States, the city of Las Vegas is best known for its casinos, followed by Atlantic City and Chicago.

While there are some places almost entirely defined by their casino, many modern casinos are built to be much more than gambling centers. They often include Michelin star restaurants, luxury hotels and shopping areas, as well as high-profile concerts and other forms of entertainment.

The precise origin of gambling is unknown, but it has been a part of human society for millennia. Evidence of betting on the outcome of a game using dice was found in 2300 BC China, and playing cards rose in popularity around 800 AD. Today, casinos cater to gamblers from all over the world.

There are three general types of casino games: gaming machines, table games and random number games. Gaming machines are operated by mechanical devices, and do not require the involvement of casino employees. Table games, such as blackjack and craps, involve one or more players competing against the casino house and are conducted by live croupiers. Random number games, such as roulette and baccarat, are based on the selection of random numbers from a spinning wheel or other device. While some casinos only offer one or two of these types of games, others may specialize in a specific type or region of the world.
