Poker

Poker is a game in which players try to earn points by betting with their hands. The dealer deals the players cards faceup. The player to the left of the big blind is the first to act. The player may either check or raise his bet. The dealer then “burns” one card from the top of the deck and deals the first three community cards faceup.

The word “poker” is derived from the German word pochen, which means “card game”. The game is closely related to the Persian bluffing game as nas, and is thought to have been brought to North America by French settlers. Poker has numerous variations and is played in many countries worldwide.

The game can be played with any number of players, although six or eight is the preferred number. In poker, the sum of bets from all players in a given deal is called the “pot.” If a player’s hand is higher than anyone else’s, he or she can win the pot.

Each betting interval begins with a player betting. Players then have two options to show their hands: to raise their bets, or fold their hand. A player may also choose to discard one or more cards after seeing his or her cards.
